Women Visit Pengcheng to Commemorate Revolutionary Martyrs — Trip to Xuzhou

On this sunny and mild weekend, we embarked on our trip to Xuzhou. Known as the "Thoroughfare of Five Provinces", this city is home to abundant historical sites and carries magnificent revolutionary memories. The Huaihai Martyrs Memorial Tower was the most anticipated stop on our journey.

After hours of driving, we finally arrived in Xuzhou. After a short rest, we headed straight for the Huaihai Martyrs Memorial Tower Park. The moment we stepped through the park gate, an air of tranquility and solemnity swept over us. Tall pine and cypress trees line both sides of the path, as if standing guard for the revolutionary martyrs and recounting that unforgettable chapter of history. A gentle breeze stirs the leaves, whose rustling sounds like soft hymns sung in praise of the martyrs.

Walking along the main road of the park, the Huaihai Campaign Martyrs Memorial Tower rises towering not far away. Standing 38.15 meters high, the structure exudes solemn dignity under the sunshine. On its facade are nine gilded Chinese characters — Huaihai Campaign Martyrs Memorial Tower, inscribed by Chairman Mao Zedong. The forceful strokes stand out strikingly against the blue sky, instantly drawing our gaze and stirring deep reverence within our hearts.

At the foot of the memorial tower, we carefully examined the relief sculptures on both sides of the tower base. Vivid and lifelike, these carvings depict PLA soldiers fighting bravely, alongside local people pushing carts and carrying supplies on their shoulders to support the frontline. Gazing at the resolute faces on the reliefs, we seemed to travel back through time to that decisive battle that shaped China’s destiny. We truly felt the fearless spirit of the martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for their ideals and convictions.

Walking around the tower, we caught sight of the surrounding corridor. On its walls are inscriptions by leaders including Liu Shaoqi and Jiang Zemin. Every line bears profound meaning, expressing deep remembrance and lofty respect for the revolutionary martyrs. Names of more than 30,000 martyrs are densely carved on the wall. Behind each name lies a once-living life and a stirring, heroic story. With heavy hearts, we gently traced these names, hoping to feel the warmth they once had through our fingertips and remember the tremendous sacrifices they made for our country and people.

Inside the corridor, a large ceramic mural depicts the grand scenes of the Huaihai Campaign in a panoramic view with delicate brushwork. From fierce battles to logistical support in the rear, every detail is portrayed to the fullest. These murals are not only artistic masterpieces but also witnesses of history, granting us a more intuitive and profound understanding of the Huaihai Campaign.

To express our remembrance of the martyrs, the five of us stood in neat formation in front of the memorial tower and bowed our heads slowly for a moment of silence. During those brief yet endless minutes, the park fell silent except for the soft breeze blowing by. Our hearts were filled with gratitude and respect for the martyrs. It was they who sacrificed their lives for the peace and tranquility we enjoy today.

After the moment of silence, our emotions remained stirred for a long time. In the Huaihai Campaign, 600,000 PLA troops, armed with firm faith, tenacious will and outstanding wisdom, defeated 800,000 Kuomintang forces. Over 555,000 enemy troops were annihilated, laying a solid foundation for the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

This trip to Xuzhou and the visit to the Huaihai Campaign Martyrs Memorial Tower will forever be engraved in our hearts. It constantly reminds us to remember history and cherish the present. At our respective posts, we shall stay true to our original aspiration, forge ahead, carry forward the spirit of the martyrs, and contribute our part to the development of the company.
